A sombre Malta mourns Sir Anthony Mamo
It was a grey, sombre day in Malta that matched the mood of a nation in mourning, remembering Sir Anthony Mamo on Friday, 2 May, 2008. The day began with the mourners filing past the coffin at the entrance of the presidential palace in Valletta.
Beginning at 1pm, the officials began turning away mourners because it was to be moved to the St John’s Co-Cathedral.
As the coffin was prepared for transport, it was draped in the Maltese flag.
His son John and daughters Josephine and Monica came one last time to the presidential palace.
The coffin was carried out of the presidential palace, put on the gun carriage and escorted by six AFM majors.
A sizeable crowd gathered all along the route the hearse travelled from the presidential palace to the St John’s Co-Cathedral where the state funeral was held.
Hundreds of guests, dignitaries and leaders, past and present, gathered at the St John’s Co-Cathedral for the funeral.
The coffin was carried into the cathedral by the military body bearers.
As his children followed the coffin to the front of the cathedral and sat on the right of the cathedral. To their left sat two of Malta’s living former presidents: Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and Guido de Marco.
The congregation was headed by President Edward Fenech Adami and included Chief Justice Vincent DeGaetano, the speaker Anton Tabone and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi. The Opposition was led by Acting leader Charles Mangion.
During his homily, Archbishop Paul Cremona said that Sir Anthony made a positive contribution to our society.
“In his old age, Sir Mamo was very serene as he gave his approaching death a meaning through his faith in God”, he explained.
At the end of the ceremony, the bells of the St. John Co-Cathedral rang a sombre toll to marking the passing of Malta’s first president. The casket was carried on the gun carriage and escorted by an 80-strong AFM guard and the army’s band playing funeral marches.
Behind the coffin walked his family, President Edward Fenech Adami, the Chief Justice and the Speaker of the house amongst others.
After the funeral, the casket was transported to Casa Arkati for a private ceremony with the family to be held on Saturday morning at St Helen Basilica in his hometown Birkirkara.
