Winter Moods make history
Winter Moods have confirmed their position as Malta’s top rock band when they entertained a crowd of over 7500 at the Valletta Waterfront recently. The band played through their string of hits in a two hour show that had the audience singing along through every tune.

The show kicked off at 2130CEST with Fake Love, followed by All The Time In The World, Adrenaline and a string of hits including Everyday Song, Come To You, Sarah, Crazy Moon, Moonshine, and the show’s outstanding finale with Marigold. During one of the most intimate moments of the performance, when Ivan Grech and Melvin Caruana were performing on the catwalk, George Curmi (il-Puse’) accompanied the duo on the violin in an outstanding rendition of the classic rock song Dust In The Wind and the band’s own Friends.

Winter Moods made music history with the highest number of tickets ever sold for a performance by a local act. Ivan Grech said, “We were amazed by the turn out and the feedback. The people’s support made it all worthwhile. We had a fantastic time on stage, the crowd’s response to our songs carried us through our set seamlessly. It was an emotional experience and a dream come through for the band. We will carry this concert in our hearts for years and years to come.”

Winter Moods concert was the Vodafone Music Jam event of this year, organized by NnG Promotions.

Student win inspires Mtarfa school
Steven Vella The head and teachers at the Sir Temi Zammit School in Mtarfa are celebrating their student’s win in a competition organised by the Malta Tourism Authority – but the implications of Steven Vella’s victory run much deeper.

Ritienne Buhagiar, the English teacher who helped Mr Vella with his project, said that it proved how capable secondary school students are and would hopefully break through the stigma associated with students who do not make it through the Junior Lyceum exams.

Steven admitted that he had not really made an effort to pass the exam but has since settled down to his studies.

“I did think of doing the exams again a year later but by then I had made a lot of friends so I decided to stay at Mtarfa,” he said.

Carmel S. Micallef took over as head four years ago and has made a tremendous difference, filling his 300 students and staff with enthusiasm through his belief in their ability to achieve.

The MTA project is part of the CHOICE programme, aimed at encouring students to consider careers in tourism and to make them more aware of the sector.

When he heard about the project, he contacted MTA for more details and then approached his teacher. Work on his idea started in April, taking up every spare minute until last week’s presentation. The project had to be constantly revised as Ms Buhagiar constantly cautioned him not to go overboard. She failed – Steven’s project covered dozens of different angles from radio adverts to posters and engraved prizes.

Steven’s project envisaged a full-day festival in his home town of Mgarr and his creativity made him the clear winner, with teams from St Dorothy’s and Sacred Heart as runners-up.

“Still, when we were waiting for the presentation, we still felt that we had not done enough. I really did not expect to win. All the projects had something really special about them. The important thing is that my father was really proud of what I had done and it would not have mattered had I not won,” Steven said.

At one point, it had seemed that neither of his parents would be able to attend the ceremony but thankfully both did and they were there to see their son beat teams from nine other schools.

His will share his prize – a trip to Budapest – with his father.

British High Commission launches new website
On Thursday, 26 June, 2008 the British High Commission in Malta launched a new-look website, as part of the UK Foreign Office’s effort to enhance the impact of its global web presence. The new web platform will increase the resilience and performance of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's public-facing websites, including those of Embassies and High Commissions overseas.

The High Commission website address has changed to www.ukinmalta.fco.gov.uk, with the title itself reflecting the commitment of the UK to Malta.

The website is a first point contact for British nationals living in Malta, and for British travellers seeking guidance. It carries clear advice about passport and visa matters. It describes the High Commission’s work in Malta, including policy work with the Maltese government. The News section brings together the latest developments in UK Foreign Policy globally, and the latest local news from the British High Commission’s press section.

Commenting on the launch of the new website, British High Commissioner Nick Archer said: “Over the past year and a half, the number of visitors to our website has more than doubled. We want to sustain that growth. The new website will meet the growing needs of our target audiences, and improve our service delivery. It will permit more interactivity. And we hope that it will prove stimulating to more and more visitors.”

The High Commissioner’s web blog remains the most visited page on the website, and will keep on running on the new site. The High Commission welcomes everyone in Malta to its website, looks forward to feedback and will do its best to respond to any thoughts visitors may have.
