The recently set up Maltese National Canine Federation now has four out of the five existing Canine clubs on the Island affiliated to it. The Federation has therefore gained recognition by The British Kennel Club. It also enjoys a provisional reciprocal agreement with same Kennel Club.
The four clubs forming the Federation, namely The Malta Canine Society, The German Shepherd Dog Association, The Maltese Ladies Kennel Association and The Obedience & Agility Association, decided to form a Federation last year. This was because they had become unhappy about the way things were being conducted in Malta, regarding Canine affairs.
The fact that the Federation managed to obtain recognition from abroad in such a short time shows the professional way this Federation is conducting things. It also shows that it should be a Federation of Clubs that should conduct things and not one single Club. The Federation also ensures that things are conducted accordingly because it is formed from Clubs of the same genre, Clubs who share the same interests, and it is the Clubs representatives on the Federation's Council that decides matters. The affiliated Clubs nominates their best and most capable members on the Federation's Council and this also ensures that the Federation's Council is administered from the most capable persons in Canine matters. Magistrate Dr. Carol Peralta is the President of this Federation.
The Maltese National Canine Federation is now controlling the issues of official Pedigrees and dog Registrations in Malta It also controls the affiliated Club's activities and ensures that their activities are organised according to its Rules and in a fair way. This will result in better organisations of Canine events in Malta. The Federation gives great importance to our juniors, and is organising competitions for our local youngsters, with the winner representing Malta at the World's greatest dog show, Crufts. Earlier this year, Adrian Hili, the Maltese representative, won the competition and became the first Maltese ever to become International Junior Handler of the Year. Another first will be achieved next Sunday the 10th September 2000, when Allison Navarro, one of Malta's previous Junior representatives, who placed 3rd in Crufts, will be the first Maltese junior to judge Junior Handlers during a Championship Show in England, when she will be doing the honours at Richmond Championship show.
The four affiliated Clubs organises various Canine related events and competitions. The Malta Canine Society and The Maltese Ladies Kennel Association specialises in the organisation of all breed Championship Dog Shows, The German Shepherd Dog Association is an Association for people who owns or have particular interests in the German Shepherd Dog breed whilst the Obedience & Agility Association organises weekly training classes for obedience and agility for all types of dogs.
The shows being organised by Club's belonging to our Federation for the remainder of this year are: The Malta Canine Society: 7th & 8th October 2000, venue: Naxxar Trade School. The Maltese Ladies Kennel Association: 28th & 29th October 2000, venue: Naxxar Trade School. The Malta Canine Society: 25th & 26th November 2000, venue: Trade Fair Grounds, Naxxar. Next year's calendar consists of 8 Championship Dog Shows, of which 4 will be organised by the Malta canine Society, 2 by the Maltese Ladies Kennel association and 2 being organised jointly by the German Shepherd Dog Association and the Obedience & Agility Association. Specialist judges from Great Britain are always invited to judge the dogs at these shows.
