In chains under the watchful eye of a Roman soldier. In the hope of making the Jewish mob change their minds, Pontius Pilate resorted to the expedient of proposing instead another man for execution. Barabbas, who had been jailed for an insurrection started in the city as well as on the charge of murder.

Pilate's remark was calculated to rouse the howling rabble to some pity, if there was any left deep down their cruel hearts.
