Two Roman soldiers carry a jar full of vinegar and a sponge. Jesus has avidly asked for a drink.
Accompanied by four other soldiers, and Longinus, the Roman centurion about whom an eyewitness has written :
"When they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs; but one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear (John 19:33-34).
The local brass band plays funeral music, and the music becomes more and more moving as one realises that the Crucified Saviour is the great Friend being mourned for.
