MALTA IN THE MILLENNIUM - FORMER SERVICE CHILDREN RETURN TO SCHOOL

The Millennium has provided the perfect opportunity for more than 60 past pupils and members of staff of the Royal Naval School, Tal Handaq, to return to Malta with Chevron AirHolidays in September. The group, many of whom lived on the Island in the 1960s, will gather from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, the USA and the United Kingdom. They will be joined by others who have settled on the Island to visit their old school and take a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The Royal Naval School, Tal Handaq, which closed more than twenty years ago, provided secondary and some junior education for children of British servicemen and civilians serving on the Island of Malta between 1947 and 1978.

The Royal Naval School Tal Handaq Reunion Association has steadily grown over the past decade and, with the aid of information technology and their own web site, the membership world wide now exceeds 850 past pupils and staff. Many have maintained regular contact with their close school friends and class mates since leaving the Island, organising small gatherings and reliving the many happy memories of their youth in Malta; some have even married and returned with their own children years later.

“‘Malta in the Millennium’ was a chance remark at the last major UK reunion”, said Bernard Hoctor, son of the one-time chief engineer of Simonds Farsons Cisk. "We knew it would be fun, but we weren’t sure The Association would have the resources and support to co-ordinate such a great event.

Viv Daly, who manages the RN School Tal Handaq Reunion Association database said: “ We have to say a big thank you to the Headmaster of Liceo Vassalli, as the school is now known, and to Michael Cassar, the Librarian, for making us so welcome during our visit and allowing us to 'Return to School' on 16th September and use the School Hall for our gathering.

In 1981 the RN School Tal Handaq reopened under the name Liceo Vassalli and now provides secondary education to the Maltese community.
