Ancient Italian manuscripts show that the use of hereditary family names in the country as began as long ago as the tenth century. Over the following centuries their use spread out beyond the commercial centers of the city states with rural population also taking a second identifying name which crystallized into their hereditary family names. The Italian family name Barberi is classified as being of occupational origin. Such a broad team is used to describe family names which have taken their origin from the trade, office or profession of the first bearer of the name. Occupational names may be agricultural in origin, as in the case of the surname Shepherd, or they may refer in one who makes objects, as in the case of Smith, while a name such as Monger derives from the retail trade, referring to one who sells products. With regard to the surname Barberi, it derives from term "barbiere" which means "barber".

Variants of the surname Barberi include Barbi, Barberie and Barbero. One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of the two brothers Giovanni and Guido Barberi, from Modena. They had to go in exile because they were too friendly with the family of the Duke D'Este. However research is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier then the reference above. Notable bearers of the surname Barberi include Giambattista Barberi, treasurer of the province of Asti, who was created noble by Carlo Emanuele 1. Because of this name to the United States, include, among others. Alessandro Barberi, aged thirty, who arrived in New York on 11th May, 1887, on board the "Cheribon".
