Some historical aspects about the surname "Bonello"
Although "Bonello" is widespread in Malta, Italian author
Casalgerardo in his "Nobiliario di Sicilia" refers mostly to "Bonelli"
as"Fatti Bravi". According to Casalgerardo, the origins of "Bonello" go
back to the times of the first millennium when a certain Amtrido Bonello
was registered as having took part in the Incoronation of Count Roger as
King of Sicily in 1099.
Another Rudolfo Bonello, who was a renowned warrior, was Count of
Puglia. He was a predecessor of Matteo Bonello, who died in Majone, and
was the Grand Admiral of Guglielmo I (nicknamed "The Bad One") who died
at the age of 46 in 1166 after a 12 year reign and was buried in
Monreale (Sicily).
In 1189, a certain Guglielmo Bonello built a Palazzo in the village
of Prizzi during the reign of Guglielmo II. Later on, this family was
given lands around Butera.
