Dr. Richard Manche' MD
The first Manche' in Malta was Pierre
Manchin who
arrived in 1748 from Troyes, France while serving in the navy of the
Order. He married Elizabeth Galea in Valletta on 29 April 1751 and by
the next generation the name
changed to what it is today due to bad spelling by the baptizing Priests
who probably
could not understand his French accent. The family lived and multiplied
in Valletta
until 1799 when the French Garrison, under siege and short of food,
expelled most
of the City dwellers, who dispersed to several outlying villages.
The Manchin family in Troyes, France, continue there to this day
although there are
emigre branches in Australia.
