I have found two leads, thus far, in my Mariani research.
The first finding is a surname history I did with some old genealogy software of mine. It stated that Mariani meant "descendant of Marius".

There are two prevelant Marius's in Roman history. One being Gauis or Caius Marius, a General and Consul member of the Roman Republic. He was an uncle of Julius Caeser. The second Marius being a Roman Emperor who ruled for 3 days before being murdered in 268 A.D.

The second finding is from the Mariani board at FamilyHistory.com. It tells the of the Mariani name found in 1111 in Assissi. It also gives alternate spellings of Mariani. And some famous Marianis.
