MONTEBELLO is the name of various localities, especially in Italy. In the
province of Milan (Monza district) a castle with a surrounding large park is
called by that name, as also the close-by village. For some time the castle
was used as an asylum for the insane. In 1797 Napoleon Bonaparte used it as
his headquarters for three months. Another village by the same name exists
in Calabria, particularly related to Fassato di Calabria. MONTEBELLO DI
BERTONA is a village in the province of Teramo (Penne district), whereas
MONTEBELLO DI CASTEGGIO is another village in the province of Pavâa. ëDi
Casteggio‰ was added to the original name in memory of a battle between the
French and the Austrians. On that occasion General Lannes received the
title of Count of Montebello. Another similar encounter took place there
between the two sides in 1859 when the Austrians (under Stadion) succumbed
to the French (under Forey) in the most important battle of that year.
MONTEBELLO VICENTINO is a village in the province of Vicenza (Lonigo
district). Here twice were the Austrians defeated by the French, by
Napoleon in 1796, and by Prince Eugene de Beauharnais in 1805.
Other localities which bear the name MONTEBELLO exist elsewhere. In Canada
(Quebec province, territory of Ottawa) a river and a village situated on its
banks bear the name. Closely, surrounded by a woods, there is a castle in
which the Canadian patriot Louis Joseph Papineau, head of the rebellion of
1837-38 in South Canada, peacefully lived out his final years. Papineau is
buried there alongside his father Joseph, also a politician and Canadian
patriot. In Peru a gold mine in the dependency of Puno (province of Sandia;
Fara district) is called MONTEBELLO.

publication by RÄcker, Das Gefecht bei Montebello, published in Berlin in
1902.
The PEACE OF MONTEBELLO is the name with which is known the agreement
between the German Emperor Frederic I and the Lombard cities in April 1174.
On this occasion the Lombards surrendered their arms to the monarch. Later,
due to this treaty, the Emperor also received in Pavia the ambassadors of
the Roman Pope.

MONTEBELLO comes from MONTEBELLUM which means the mountain of war.
My family has been residing in Malta from the year 1648 when Vincenzo
Montebello married Katarina (surname unknowed) and when to live in
Tarxien. From there most probably all other Montebello families emerged.
History says (by word of month) that previously the Montebello family
lived in ROME and where involved in business (I do not know which). Than
for some reason they came to Malta ... and lived happliy ever after ...
