The surname Pace, although frequently found on the Island of Malta, is ultimately of Italian origin. Malta was in fact long under the control of Sicily and indeed on the 5th.October 1350 was directly incorporated into the Crown of Sicily thus accounting from the profusion of Italian surnames found on the island. In the case of the surname Pace this name is of patronymic origin, being one of those names based on the first name of a father. In this case the name is derived from personal name Pace, thus the surname indicates that early bearers of that name were "sons/decendants of Pace.
It was not not until the early Middle Ages that surnames were first used to distinguish between numbers of people bearing the same personal name. With the growth of documentation in the later Middle Ages, such names became essential and a person whose distinguished name described his trade, his place of residence, his fathers's name, or some personal characteristic, passed that name on to his children, and the surname became hereditary.
The origins of the name Pace itself may be traced back to the Latin words "pax pacis", meaning "peace" ; early bearers of this name would have been bestowed with the sobriquet because of their calm and peace-makers in the family, or to individuals who spread peace in a religious way. Refrences to the name in Italy occur as early as the sixth and seventh centuries, the most common forms being Pax, Pace, Pacius, and Pacinus.
The Pace family of Udine were ennobled in 1658, recieving the title of counts.

Pace is a VERY common Maltese surname. A prove is the Telephone Directory.
The pronounciation varies from family to family. Some people say it like
Italian 'PACE' but commonly others say it as PAC.
