Coat of Arms submitted by Keith Saliba

Since the name is of Aramaic origin, and we know that because of the final "a" in the name which is the Aramaic definite article, and since the name is recorded in Arabic sources of the ninth century, i.e. about a hundred years or so before the Crusades, the Maltese Saliba's must have migrated from the Eastern Mediterranean, i.e. from places like Lebanon ,where there are a whole lot of Salibas still there, Syria and Palestine. The rest of the name means "The Crucified" of course taken after Jesus Christ, thus designating the family as followers of the crucified, i.e. Christians. Other members of the family have also migrated to Sicily and Italy as is well documented by the presence of such painters from the sixteenth century as Antonello de Saliba and Pietro de Saliba.

The Saliba / saleeby family of Lebanon/palestine/syria is directly descended from the ancient kings of sparta. There is a book which was printed in the USA in 1950 which contains the family history. It was translated into english from the aramaic a few years prior. It details the family history from about 500bc till modern times. I have a copy and have typed out about half of it into Word for Windows text files.
