Coat of Arms Submitted by Geoff Sultana

The SAVONA family has been characterised by three generations of Maltese political personalities. The first was the nineteenth century politician Sigismondo SAVONA (born Valletta, 12/03/1835 or 1837, died 24/07/1908). A Vincenzo SAVONA is mentioned in connection with Sigismondo, when during a political meeting in 1893, Sigismondo's brother Vincenzo was arrested . However Sigismondo's surviving grandchild - Sister Emma Savona S.J.A. (sister to Fr. Anthony Savona - vide infra) maintains that Sigismondo had no brothers but lots of sisters (about 6). Of these siblings, only one was married and changed her surname to Sacco. She had one daughter - Maria Sacco - who married Prof. Joseph Ellul. Sigismondo's wife - Filomena Savona nee` Caruana - was the niece of Bishop Francesco Saverio Caruana.

Sigismondo SAVONA had six children, 3 daughters and 3 sons. Sigismono's daughter - Raffaele - married Alfredo DANDRIA, parents of the last priest-politician Mons. Enrico DANDRIA who served for a month prior to his death as Minister of Education of the Nationalist legislature (born Valletta 14/06/1892, died Sliema 03/07/1932). The other two daughters were Mary and Bice - both spinsters. The three sons - William, Edward, and Pio - were all officers in the RMA holding the ranks of Colonel, Major and Captain respectively .

Col. William SAVONA (born Valletta 07/01/1865, died 18/01/1937) was the first president of the Labour Party. William SAVONA was married to Nusa Rosenenbush (?) and had at least two sons and four daughters. William's son - Victor SAVONA was interred [Internee No. 53] on May 1940 and deported to Uganda during the Second World War since he had been a member of the British Union of Fascists. He was released on the 16th April 1944. Post-war Victor emigrated with his family. His brother Edgar SAVONA, a doctor practising in West Africa in the Colonial Service, drowned during the war when his ship was torpedoed. One of the daughters was married to a British Naval Officer. Guiseppe SAVONA was another internee during the Second World War being picked up in May 1940 and kept at the Fort Salvatore Internment Camp .

The Jesuit priest, a grandson of Sirgismondo, Fr. Anthony SAVONA (born Valletta 10/10/1911, died 07/06/1989) who was sent to the missions in 1953 and served as treasurer of the Dumka diocese during 1962-89. Fr. Savona was the grandchild of Sirgismondo. He has one sister - Sister Emma Savona SJA .
