Like so many Maltese surnames, the name Vella is ultimately of Italian origin. In this instance, the name is variant of more well-known surname Bella and is derived from the Calabrian and Sicilian word +ACI-vella+ACI- a dialect form of +ACI-bella+ACI- meaning +ACI-beautiful+ACI- a nickname applied to one of exceptional beauty. Numerous variants of the surname exist, such as Bella, Belli, Bellacci, Bellatta, Bellachini, Belluzzi and many, many more.
Noble families bearing the surnames Vella include the Vella family of Sicily who were in fact of Maltese origin. Giuseppe Vella, from Malta, settled in Terranova, Sicila, where his son Giovanni Vella, became a member of the order of S.Giacomo della Spada in 1674. The Vella family of Malta held the title of Barons of S.Giovanni. Members of the Vella family of Malta have long been listed amongst the nobility of that island and count among their family the Counts of San Paolino D'Aquileja and the Marquis of Taflia. Elena Vella married Carmello Alessi in Malta in 1880 while Elizabeth Vella married Giuseppe Maria Bonavit Carbot Testaferrata, and interestingly enough, their daughter married Dr. Vincenzo Vella.
