Crest Submitted by Manuel Psaila

Some variations in spelling found were Veratinum, Walintune, Werynton, Weryngton, Warenton, Warradine, Warrenton and Warrington. The first spelling may be 2000 years old and the last at least 300 years old.

The name Warrington appears to have been associated with an English village named Weir Town. (A village on the Mersey located at a ford below a dam or spillway on the river. The weir was used to raise or lower the water level or control fish migration.) People from this village were referred to as being from Weir Town or they were given the surname Weirinton. The Warrington surname could have been formulated as early as 1086 when, according to writings, the Romans built a complex on the south bank of the Mersey and called it Veratinum. The initial Warrington spelling is believed to have originated at this location in England. The name, as formulated, was used by scribes to identify individuals from Weir Town. In 1600, the Warrington spelling was a recognized surname in England and the Colonies.

The spelling of collateral surnames is believed to have been created by many different scribes as they described individuals through reference to their appearance, skill or trade, or also by a description of the place from which they were known to have originated.

In centuries gone by, it was also fairly common to refer to someone "new in town" by the name of the place from which they came; for example, "David of Warrington". In fact one will note almost NO Warringtons living in or around Warrington, England! It could be assumed was that individuals came to be CALLED Warrington when they MOVED AWAY from Warrington.
