Malta was ruled successively (starting from the 16th century BC.) by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs: with the Norman conquest of Malta in July 1090, the island became part of the Kingdom of Sicily. While subject to this Kingdom (1090-1530), Malta had many rulers, the Normans (House of Hauteville), the Germans (House of Hohenstaufen), French (House of Anjou), Spanish (House of Aragon), Austrians ( House of Hapsburg.)
From 1530 to 1798 Malta, still being nominally under the Kingdom of Sicily, was ruled by the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
From 1798 to 1800 was under the French Republic, and from 1800 to 1964 was part of the British Empire.
The Xuereb family is quoted by Charles A. Gauci in his book " The Genealogy and Heraldry of the Noble Families of Malta", where the author tells us that the earliest references of this family go back to 1517 with Tommeo Xuereb mentioned as "Nobile" or "Noble." Guaci gives us also the Coat of Arms of the family, but tracing the origin of the name is very difficult, even if we have some indication for the name to be of Central European origin.
The fact that the Coat of Arms shows two Moors' heads could also signify that the Xuerebs distinguished themselves in the fighting against the Muslims, participating to the crusades: this fact would give to this family a much earlier origin.

When we were younger we were told thatthe Xuereb name originated from
Bereux ( french Bureaux) who moved to Malta and reversed their name to hide their identity.
