My great grandfather Antonio who was born in Bone in Algeria in 1840 was
sent to Malta as an orphan to be brought up by relatives and was always
referred to as Antonio Zammit Ta Bona. Hence the origin of the name.
Ironically Zammit Tabona and Ellul Sullivan are both 19th Century names
emanating from nicknames. In 1953 my eldest uncle, John married Sally nee
Ellul Sullivan.
Antonio was a very successful businessman who was purveyor
to the British Army and Navy in the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to
Alexandria. His business was known as A Tabona and Sons of whom there were
six; Vincent, my grandfather who was the eldest, Joseph, Emmanuel,
Francesco, Luigi and Salvatore. These are the ancestors of all present day
Zammit Tabonas. My father was called Alfred and was married to Maria Carmela
k/a Mollie Debono daughter of the late Professor Salvino Debono MD DLO FRCS
and Violet Mary nee Harding. My father's youngest brother Col Godfrey Z
Tabona OBE who was married to Elizabeth Anne Crecy Bingham-Newland, died on
30 November 1999; none of my father's brothers had any children and I am now
the sole Zammit Tabona in the eldest line.I am sure you will be receiving
more info from other cousins once the name is on the web. As arms we use the
classic Zammit one.

Some of these surnames are not of Maltese Origin but all the surnames are found in Malta, also note that colors
appear different on various browsers and operating systems depending of the gamma correction (eg a dark blue color on a Mac can appear almost black on a PC, silver might appear as cyan etc.).
